Oak Persistence in Mediterranean Landscapes: The Combined Role of Management, Topography, and Wildfires Ecology and Society
Holmgren, Milena; Resource Ecology Group, Wageningen University; milena.holmgren@wur.nl; Mohren, Godefridus M.J.; Forest Ecology and Forest Management Group, Wageningen University; frits.mohren@wur.nl.
Mediterranean ecosystems have been shaped by a history of human and ecological disturbances. Understanding the dynamics of these social-ecological systems requires an understanding of how human and ecological factors interact. In this study, we assess the combined role of management practices and biophysical variables, i.e., wildfire and topography, to explain patterns of tree persistence in a cork oak (Quercus suber L.) landscape of southern Portugal. We used face-to-face interviews with landowners to identify the management practices and the incentives that motivated them. We used aerial photographs and a Geographic Information System (GIS) to classify vegetation patch-type transitions over a period of 45 years (1958-2002) and logistic regression to...

Observing mixed layer depth, nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations in the northwestern Mediterranean: A combined satellite and NO 3 profiling floats experiment ArchiMer
D'Ortenzio, Fabrizio; Lavigne, Heloise; Besson, Florent; Claustre, Herve; Coppola, Laurent; Garcia, Nicole; Laes-huon, Agathe; Le Reste, Serge; Malarde, Damien; Migon, Christophe; Morin, Pascal; Mortier, Laurent; Poteau, Antoine; Prieur, Louis; Raimbault, Patrick; Testor, Pierre.
Two profiling floats, equipped with nitrate concentration sensors were deployed in the northwestern Mediterranean from summer 2012 to summer 2013. Satellite ocean color data were extracted to evaluate surface chlorophyll concentration at float locations. Time series of mixed layer depths and nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations were analyzed to characterize the interplay between the physical-chemical and biological dynamics in the area. Deep convection (mixed layer depth > 1000 m) was observed in January–February, although high-nitrate surface concentrations could be already observed in December. Chlorophyll increase is observed since December, although high values were observed only in March. The early nitrate availability in subsurface layers, which...

Offshore mollusc production in the Mediterranean basin ArchiMer
Danioux, Christian; Bompais, Xavier; Paquotte, Philippe; Loste, Claudine.
In the Mediterranean basin, offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development stems from the limited potential of lagoons and ponds, and centres mainly on mussel production. Suspension culture technologies are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shellfish farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved and their relatively low profit margins.

Optimisation de la surveillance des masses d’eau DCE en Méditerranée. Utilisation de produits dérivés d’images satellites en complément du réseau de mesures in-situ ArchiMer
Ganzin, Nicolas; Mangin, Antoine.
This study aims at showing the potential of « water colour » data derived from satellite imagery to optimise the monitoring of coastal waters within the WFD, with the French Mediterranean as a study area. The work is focused on one specific parameter, the surface chlorophyll-A (chl-a) concentration of which a monthly atlas for reference to “normal” values is provided, which consists of : (i) the monthly chl-a median computed from satellite data of 2003, 2004 and 2005 ; (ii) the integration in space of these values, represented by their average over the WFD water masses (except those of very small size) ; (iii) an indicator of the spatial variability of the chl-a through the spatial standard deviation within each water mass. Another important result is the...

Organic and inorganic human-induced contamination of Posidonia oceanica meadows ArchiMer
Pergent, Gerard; Labbe, Celine; Lafabrie, Celine; Kantin, Roger; Pergent-martini, Christine.
In coastal environments, plants are used for phytoremediation of contamination. Organic and inorganic contaminants may be due to natural and/or anthropogenic sources. The aim of this study is to compare inorganic (trace metal) and organic (PAH) contamination in Posidonia oceanica and to analyse the relationship between these types of pollutants indeed very few studies have been interested in their correlations and common sources. P. oceanica leaves were collected in two sites exhibiting different levels of human-induced pressure. Higher values were recorded in the more polluted site (Toulon) for trace metals (Ag, Hg, Pb) as well as for PAHs (Medium Molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight) due to the presence of the city and/or harbour in proximity. For...

Organic matter isotopes reveal enhanced rainfall activity in Northwestern Mediterranean borderland during warm substages of the last 200 kyr ArchiMer
Pasquier, Virgil; Toucanne, Samuel; Sansjofre, Pierre; Dixit, Yama; Revillon, Sidonie; Mokeddem, Zohra; Rabineau, Marina.
In this study we use bulk sediment organic matter stable isotopes (δ13Corg and δ15N) to examine the nature and timing of preserved organic matter in borehole PRGL1-4 from Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. This region is known as a transitional zone between the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and the North African monsoon system. In the Gulf of Lion (SE France), increased inputs of organic matter from sediment-laden rivers occurred during warm substages of the last 200 kyr (MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a; MIS 6d, and 6b). Increased terrestrial organic matter are inferred from organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg), and are interpreted as resulting from enhanced rainfall over the Rhone river catchment area. Such increase in terrestrial organic carbon induced...

Origin and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean Margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Buscail, R.; Puig, P.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Radakovitch, Olivier; Jeanty, G.; Heussner, S..
Continental margins receive natural and anthropogenic trace elements (TEs) from direct atmospheric deposition of aerosols onto the sea surface and from advection of riverine suspended particles and/or resuspended sediments from the continental shelf/slope. When the margin is incised by submarine canyons, as for example in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, most of these particles are preferentially transferred via these topographic features towards their final repositories in the abyssal plain. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) shelf receives the largest particulate riverine input to the Western Mediterranean, with its associated chemical contaminants originating from the industrialized and urbanized Rhone Valley. Sediments samples (grabs, cores and moored traps)...

Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic analysis of Holocene deposits from the Adriatic Sea: detecting and dating short-term fluctuations in sediment supply ArchiMer
Vigliotti, L; Verosub, K; Cattaneo, Antonio; Trincardi, F; Asioli, A; Piva, A.
We present palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic results from five cores collected in the basin of the Adriatic Sea. Four cores (PRAD2-4; KS02-246; CSS00-23 and CSS00-07) were collected along a shore-parallel transect whereas the fifth core (AMC99-01) was retrieved in the central Adriatic in 250 m water depth, on the floor of the Meso-Adriatic Depression. After alternating field demagnetization, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) directions show a characteristic and primary magnetization of the sediments that is representative of secular variation of the geomagnetic field. By combining C-14 dating and the ages of magnetic inclination features, it has been possible to establish an age-depth model for all of the cores. Precise identification of the secular...

Preliminary data on the impact of fish farming facilities on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Pergent, G; Mendez, S; Pergent-martini, C; Pasqualini, V.
While the extension of aquaculture along the coasts of the Mediterranean islands is today an economic priority, no data is available on the impact of these facilities on the littoral environment in general, and in particular on the Posidonia oceanica meadows that are responsible for the richness and diversity of these biotopes. The impact of fish farming facilities in the marine littoral environment is assessed at three Mediterranean sites in Corsica and Sardinia. Various parameters are considered: (i) the amount of light available, (ii) the nature of the sediment, and (iii) the vitality of the Posidonia oceanica beds. The findings confirm the impact of the aquaculture facilities within the water column (increase in turbidity, enrichment of the sediment in...

Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A new shallow-marine munidopsid (Anomura, Galatheoidea) from the Upper Miocene in the Maroni-Psematismenos Basin of Cyprus Naturalis
Fraaije, R.H.B..
Several well-preserved remains of a new munidopsid anomuran, Palmunidopsis muelleri n. gen., n. sp., are described from a Late Miocene (Tortonian-Messinian) reef-associated decapod crustacean faunule of southern Cyprus. This is the first record of a Late Miocene representative of the family. The occurrence in very shallow-water, reefal limestones of the Koronia Member (Pakhna Formation) in southern Cyprus is atypical in comparison to the ecology of extant munidopsids.

Production primaire et activité bactérienne en eutrophisation expérimentale (lagune du Brusc - Automne 1977) ArchiMer
Cahet, G.; Martin, Y..
An experimental eutrophication carried out with several technics on mediterranean sea water (Embiez) in autumn shows : - significant variations in the electro-chemical composition of phytoplanktonic excretion; complex organic substances are excreted during two different periods, especially after the Skeletonema costatum bloom; - close relations between heterotrophy (l4C glucose test) and excretion of organic matter by photosynthetic organisms, glucids are always predominant; - the original heterotrophy from the 14c pyruvate test; which is obviously more selective than the 14c glucose test; - the existence of different periods of active ultraplankton.

Rapport sur l'exercice de la pêche dans la zone côtière de la France ArchiMer
Bolopion, Jacques; Forest, Andre; Sourd, Louis-julien.
The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context...

Reconstruction of full glacial environments and summer temperatures from Lago della Costa, a refugial site in Northern Italy ArchiMer
Samartin, Stephanie; Heiri, Oliver; Kaltenrieder, Petra; Kühl, Norbert; Tinner, Willy.
Vegetation and climate during the last ice age and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, similar to 23,000-19,000 cal BP) were considerably different than during the current interglacial (Holocene). Cold climatic conditions and growing ice-sheets during the last glaciation radically reduced forest extent in Europe to a restricted number of so-called "refugia", mostly located in the southern part of the continent. On the basis of paleobotanical analyses the Euganian Hills (Colli Euganei) in northeastern Italy have previously been proposed as one of the northernmost refugia of temperate trees (e.g. deciduous Quercus, Tilia, Ulmus, Fraxinus excelsior, Acer, Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica, Carpinus and Castanea) in Europe. In this study we provide the first...

Restoration of Seagrass Meadows in the Mediterranean Sea: A Critical Review of Effectiveness and Ethical Issues ArchiMer
Boudouresque, Charles-françois; Blanfuné, Aurélie; Pergent, Gérard; Thibaut, Thierry.
Some species of seagrasses (e.g., Zostera marina and Posidonia oceanica) have declined in the Mediterranean, at least locally. Others are progressing, helped by sea warming, such as Cymodocea nodosa and the non-native Halophila stipulacea. The decline of one seagrass can favor another seagrass. All in all, the decline of seagrasses could be less extensive and less general than claimed by some authors. Natural recolonization (cuttings and seedlings) has been more rapid and more widespread than was thought in the 20th century; however, it is sometimes insufficient, which justifies transplanting operations. Many techniques have been proposed to restore Mediterranean seagrass meadows. However, setting aside the short-term failure or half-success of...

Results of the 2003 observer program on board the French purse seiner targeting Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Farrugio, Henri.
In 2003, IFREMER implemented an observer program on board of the French purse seiner targeting bluefin tuna (BFT) in the Mediterranean Sea to collect the size composition of catches. The protocol and the sampling design were established by IFREMER and the operations were carried out by two independent scientific observers (each one following a given boat over two distinguished fishing seasons). The 788 BFT measured by the two observers during the ~ 190 fishing days were mostly small/juveniles fish and solely represented 2.7% of the total catches. The sampling appears largely insufficient to be representative of this fleet and was furthermore strongly biased (big BFT being under-sampled). From our viewpoint, the implementation of a joint observer program on...

Soil respiration dynamics in forage-based and cereal-based cropping systems in central Italy Scientia Agricola
Francioni,Matteo; Lai,Roberto; D'Ottavio,Paride; Trozzo,Laura; Kishimoto-Mo,Ayaka W.; Budimir,Katarina; Baldoni,Nora; Toderi,Marco.
ABSTRACT: Studies that have investigated soil carbon dynamics under Mediterranean conditions are scarce and fragmented and contrasting results have often been reported. This study aimed to fill some gaps in our knowledge by: (i) determining annual dynamics of total (RS) and heterotrophic (RH) soil respiration; (ii) estimating annual cumulative RS and RH; and (iii) investigating the relationships between RS and RH and soil temperature and water content. The study was carried out in central Italy, for a plain and a hilly site, with the focus on two main cropping systems: an alfalfa-based forage system and a wheat-based rotation system. RS and RH showed different dynamics, with spatial and temporal variability across these sites. Estimated annual cumulative...

Sources and exchanges of mercury in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Guedron, Stephane; Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Ocean margins are focal regions in terms of mercury (Hg) exchanges between the continent and the open sea. The aim of this paper is to describe the distribution and partition of Hg between the gaseous, dissolved and particulate phases in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean (NWM) margin, in order to assess the Hg sources and exchanges within the continuum between the continental shelf (Gulf of Lions) and the open sea (Northern Gyre). Mean (± standard deviation) of total Hg species (HgT) concentrations in unfiltered water samples were 1.52 ± 1.00 pmol L-1 (n=36) in the inner shelf, 1.09 ± 0.15 pmol L-1 (n=30) along the slope, and 1.10 ± 0.13 pmol L-1 (n=99) in the Northern Gyre.
